Every idea, at every scale, moves through the same four stages. AI is eating the connecting in the middle. The leap stays humans-only; the choosing stays human-led.
Human: chooses what enters the loop: what speaks to you, what you're responsible for.
AI: sifts the flood, surfaces candidates.
Curation with a point of view survives; mechanical sorting doesn't.
AI: joins the dots, brings the related thing, holds the whole corpus at once.
Human: keeps the sparks: the felt connections that border on the leap.
This used to be done by your own memory, by middle management, by society's slow routing.
Human: the jump to a new explanatory premise. Abduction, not induction or deduction.
LLMs can't jump: they master patterns and proof, not the jump to a premise nobody has written down yet.
It happens off-screen, unstructured, usually in bed.
Human: directs, applies taste, decides done.
AI: executes, drafts, renders, routes it outward.
What ships crosses the membrane into the next loop out.
The same four stages run at three scales: a human, an organisation, the world.
| A humanold bottleneck: working memory |
You: taste admits what enters your second brain. AI: sifts the feed. |
WAS: YOUR OWN MEMORY AI: a personal AI connects everything you have saved and surfaces what relates. |
HUMANS ONLY You: free-think mode; the stray spark becomes a thesis. |
You direct with taste; AI drafts and executes. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| An organisationold bottleneck: span of control |
Organisation: a shared circle of concern pre-selects the problems. AI: sifts the knowledge layer. |
WAS: MIDDLE MANAGEMENT AI: the shared world model routes what hierarchy used to. |
HUMANS ONLY People: judgement calls and leaps route to humans at the edge. |
Owners decide; AI executes and ships into the world. |
| The worldold bottleneck: one idea per skull |
Everyone: each loop draws from the commons through its own membrane. | WAS: SOCIETY ITSELF AI: society plus AI: the world-mind routes and connects across fields. |
HUMANS ONLY The edge: the jumps still happen one skull at a time. |
What ships re-enters the commons as everyone's input. |
The three modes of thinking that turn a human loop, in the order they earn each other. The leap lives in the only mode with no AI in the room. The modes are the framework; the hours and the order below are my own: for me the loop turns about once a day, but it runs lots of different ways.
Ship. The productive daylight hours: wake up and execute on the ideas captured the night before. AI executes; you direct with taste.
Select. Articles and podcasts in the hours you can think but not type: the tube on the way to work. Real intake feeds the leap; numbing just passes the time.
Connect + leap. An hour lying in bed, mind wandering with no agenda; the day's intake connects itself and the newest big thought arrives, the one that redirects tomorrow.
Connect has no hour of its own. AI runs it in the background through the whole loop, linking what you take in to everything already saved; the night mind does its own connecting too, in the wandering.
The skill is environmental: knowing, and protecting, the conditions that let your brain reach the unstructured-thinking point at all. You have to spend the days.
Humans on the rim pull things in, leap, and ship back out; every turn pushes the circle a little wider. Watch the same loop run for ten thousand years.
